Huddly C1 audio quality degraded in Microsoft Teams

Problem description

Huddly C1 audio sounds muffled, boxy or degraded during Microsoft Teams calls even after updating to the latest firmware. The same room may sound significantly better on Zoom. Voices may sound distant, reverberant or over-processed. This is most commonly reported in rooms with hard surfaces (glass walls, minimal furniture, tiled floors).

Note: Huddly C1 audio works automatically, there are no manual audio controls in the Connect App. Volume is the only user-adjustable setting.

Common causes

  • Microsoft Teams noise suppression processing competing with C1's own 16-microphone AI audio, resulting in double-processing that degrades voice quality
  • Poor room acoustics - hard reflective surfaces (glass, concrete, tile) creating reverb that both Teams and C1 process independently compounding the effect
  • C1 not selected as the default audio device in Windows sound settings, the system is using a display speaker or a different microphone instead
  • C1 firmware below 1.9.9. Audio and echo cancellation improvements were introduced in 1.9.9 and further improved in 2.0.0. Next release will see further improvements.

Step-by-step resolution

Step 1: Confirm C1 is selected as audio device
In Windows sound settings (right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar → Sound settings), confirm Huddly C1 is set as both the default output (speaker) and default input (microphone). If a display or other device is selected, change it to C1 and test again. Note: after some firmware updates, Windows may revert to a different default device, reselecting C1 manually resolves this.

Step 2: Update C1 firmware
Open Huddly Connect App → Settings → Camera Info. If an update is available, install it. Firmware 1.9.9 introduced improved echo cancellation. Firmware 2.0.0 introduced further audio and sharpness improvements.

Step 3: Disable Microsoft Teams noise suppression
In your Teams meeting, go to Settings → Devices → Noise suppression and set it to Off or Low. C1 handles noise suppression internally. Running Teams noise suppression on top of C1's own processing causes audio to sound muffled or robotic. Test the call quality with noise suppression off.

Step 4: Test with Zoom
If possible, place a test call using Zoom with the same hardware. C1 typically performs better in Zoom as Zoom does not apply competing noise suppression on top of C1's processing. If Zoom sounds significantly better, the issue is Teams audio compression, not the hardware.

Step 5: Review room acoustics
C1 performs best in rooms with soft furnishings (carpet, fabric chairs, acoustic panels). Glass walls and hard surfaces create reverberation that compounds audio processing issues. If the room cannot be acoustically treated, test with Teams noise suppression on Low rather than High.

Upcoming improvement: A firmware update including reverb removal is planned for release at the end of April 2026. This is expected to further improve audio quality in rooms with hard surfaces.

When to escalate

Contact Huddly Support if:

  • Audio quality remains poor after updating to the latest firmware and disabling Teams noise suppression
  • You would like to provide audio recordings for review by the Huddly audio team, recordings with noise suppression on and off are both needed. Recommend to clap or tab on the table in both recordings.

What to include:

Serial number of the C1, firmware version, room description (surface types, size), Setup type: BYOD, room system, Microsoft Teams Rooms, Zoom Rooms, or standalone. Recording with Microsoft Teams noise suppression on and off if, confirmation of whether Zoom audio is affected.
